Glossary
Braids & nails,
simply explained.
What are box braids?
+
Box braids are individual three-strand braids whose roots are sectioned into squares (“boxes”), usually with braided-in extensions for length and volume. They are a protective style because they spare your natural hair for several weeks.
What is the difference between box braids and knotless braids?
+
Knotless braids start with your own hair with no knot at the root, and the extensions are fed in gradually. They lie flatter, look more natural and pull less on the scalp than classic box braids.
What are cornrows?
+
Cornrows are braids worked flat against the scalp in lines or patterns. They can be worn alone or combined with long braids, as in Fulani braids.
What are Fulani braids?
+
Fulani braids combine cornrows running from the parting to the back or sides with free-hanging braids, often decorated with beads or metal rings. The style comes from the tradition of the Fula (Fulani) people of West Africa.
What are crochet braids?
+
For crochet braids, natural hair is first braided into cornrows, then ready-made braids, curls or twists are hooked in with a crochet needle. It is quicker than braiding every strand individually.
What is the difference between gel polish and Shellac?
+
Shellac is the brand name of a well-known gel polish; both are applied like nail polish and cured under a UV or LED lamp. They usually last much longer than classic polish and shine with no drying time.
How long does gel polish last?
+
Gel polish usually lasts two to three weeks, depending on nail growth, nail condition and daily life. It should then be removed properly, not peeled off, to protect the natural nail.
Is a cosmetic pedicure the same as podiatry?
+
No. The cosmetic pedicure at Komo Beauty cares for nails, cuticles and dry areas and gives a beautiful finish; podiatry is medical foot care for problems such as ingrown nails or diabetes.
