Gel polish, Shellac or gel: the difference

You hear a lot of terms at the nail salon. Here are the main differences, so you know what to choose for your manicure.

Nude gel polish manicure

Regular nail polish

It air-dries, comes off easily with polish remover and suits you if you like to change colour often. It is less durable, though, and can chip after a few days.

Gel polish

Gel polish is applied like polish and cured under a UV or LED lamp. It stays glossy, is dry straight away and usually lasts two to three weeks. It needs proper removal — please do not peel it off, as that weakens the natural nail.

Shellac

Shellac is the brand name of a well-known gel polish. In everyday language the word is often used for gel polish in general. Application, curing and removal work in a similar way.

Gel and nail extensions

Builder gel is thicker and is used to strengthen or lengthen nails. It is filed and filled in at regular intervals. Ideal if you want longer nails or textured nail art.

Which one suits you?

A quick guide:

  • Frequent colour changes: regular polish.
  • Long-lasting shine without chips: gel polish or Shellac.
  • Longer or stronger nails: gel or nail extensions.
