The usual wear time
Box braids, knotless braids and twists are usually worn for four to eight weeks. How long yours last depends on your hair type, growth, braid size and care. Small braids often last longer than very large ones, but they take longer to install.
Most braiders advise not to keep braids in much longer than about eight weeks. After that, new growth starts to mat at the root and take-down becomes slow and hard on your hair.
Signs it is time to take them out
A few signs show your braids have done their job:
- More than one to two centimetres of new growth at the root.
- Matting or tangles at the base of the braids.
- Persistent itching or build-up on the scalp.
- Braids hanging on by only a few strands.
How to make braids last
Wear a satin scarf or bonnet at night, cleanse your scalp regularly and dry thoroughly after washing: these three habits make the biggest difference. Avoid very tight ponytails or buns in the first few days.
Small touch-ups around the hairline can extend the style. Ask at your appointment what makes sense for your hair.
After take-down
You will see a lot of shed hair when you take your braids out. That is normal: it is the hair you would have shed anyway over those weeks, held inside the braids. Give your hair a thorough wash, a deep conditioner and, if possible, a few days off before your next set. At Komo Beauty in Ebikon you can also book braid removal as a service.
