Knotless vs box braids: the difference

At first glance the two styles look alike. The difference is at the root, and it changes the weight, the feel and the look.

Knotless braids and box braids side by side

Box braids: a knot at the root

With classic box braids, the extension is attached at the root with a small knot. This creates well-defined square parts and lots of volume from day one. The look is bold and holds well.

Knotless braids: no knot

Knotless braids start with your own hair and the extension is fed in gradually. The root lies flatter, looks more natural and puts less tension on the scalp. In return, installation usually takes longer.

Which style suits you?

A few simple pointers:

  • Sensitive scalp or fragile edges: knotless braids.
  • Volume at the root and a classic look: box braids.
  • Short on time for the appointment: often box braids.
  • A very natural-looking root: knotless braids.

Advice in the salon

In the end, your hair, your scalp and your routine decide. Cathy Bieri advises you at Komo Beauty in Ebikon in English, French or German and braids both styles in every length.

short.

Are knotless braids gentler on the hair?

They usually put less tension on the root because there is no knot. What matters most is that the braids are not too tight.

Are knotless braids more expensive?

They usually take longer. At Komo Beauty the price is given on request, based on length and thickness.

Can I put knotless braids up?

Yes, after a few days, once your scalp has settled. Avoid very tight styles at first.
