How to care for braids

Well-kept braids look fresh for longer and protect your own hair. This simple routine works for box braids, knotless braids, cornrows and twists.

Neat African braids and a healthy-looking scalp

Cleanse your scalp

Your scalp still needs care under braids. Wash it every one to two weeks with a diluted, gentle shampoo: apply it between the parts, massage with your fingertips and rinse well. Do not rub the lengths, just let the water run through.

Dry thoroughly

Braids hold a lot of water. Squeeze them with a microfibre towel and let them dry completely, in the air or with a hairdryer on low heat. Braids that stay damp can start to smell.

Protect them at night

A satin scarf, bonnet or pillowcase reduces friction, frizz and fuzz. It is the easiest way to keep braids neat for longer.

What your scalp likes

A few small habits go a long way:

  • A light oil or spray for dryness, used sparingly on the scalp.
  • No heavy gels or thick butters that leave build-up.
  • No very tight ponytails in the first days.
  • If you have strong itching, redness or pain, have the braids loosened and see a doctor if needed.
